Vigil of the Assumption (English)

Dormition2.jpg

Yesterday (Wednesday) was the Feast of the Assumption, so we celebrated the Vigil of the Assumption on Tuesday evening. Traditionally, this is a penitential time for the Church as she prepares herself for the celebration of the great feast day on the following day (and the East still observes a fast for two weeks prior to the feast day). Therefore, it is good to focus one's meditation on this day on the traditional doctrine of the death of Our Lady (sometimes called the Dormition or the "falling asleep"). The image to the right is taken from the Church of Our Lady's Dormition in Jerusalem which is one of the two contenders for the tomb of the Virgin Mary (from which she was resurrected and assumed).
